Losing a job is one of the most traumatic experiences you can ever have professionally, and you’ll need to figure out how to motivate yourself to get back up again.

Getting laid off is an unfortunate reality that most of us encounter at some point in our career journey. Especially during tough economic times, the fear of unemployment can be overwhelming, leading professionals to panic and lose sight of their short- and long-term goals. However, it is crucial to remember that resilience and determination can pave the way to success, even in challenging circumstances.

How to motivate yourself after job loss

Allow yourself to grieve

Being let go from a job you love and have invested time and passion in is akin to any other rejection in life. Many describe the same feelings they feel when they have experienced the death of a loved one.

Motivate yourself by allowing yourself to feel these emotions of loss, anger, and sadness so that you can recognize the pain and focus on healing and moving on. Though it may not feel like it at first, sometimes losing a job can lead you to discover even greater strengths within yourself.

Accept that it can happen and has happened to you

It is normal to initially feel disappointed with this shift in your career path. However, you need to keep in mind that every company is a business, and the decision to let you go is ultimately just a business decision that can happen to anyone.

Maybe you were not right for them at this point, but then maybe the reverse is true as well, and that company might not be the best fit for you. Regardless of whether you were laid off or fired, you can choose to control how you react and learn from the experience.

Explore many other opportunities

This may be the perfect time to revamp your professional profiles and make sure you are portraying the best version of yourself to any potential employer. Make sure your profile is appealing and applicable to your industry, and that you have good, updated work samples available in your portfolio.

Once this is done, start putting yourself out there and casting your net as wide and high as possible. The sky’s the limit!

Evaluate your financial situation

Let’s face it, the biggest blow from losing a job is the loss of a steady income and the loss of other security blankets, such as medical insurance. You need to quickly get a handle on where you stand financially and formulate a practical plan for survival until you get back on your feet.

This may include re-evaluating:

  • Your bills and what you spend money on to find where you can cut back.
  • Your dependents and how many people depend on you so that you can seek extra help in the interim if you’re the only source of income for others.

Finding someone to talk to

Remember, you may have lost this job, but there is still a vast world waiting for you to take it by storm. If you need to find some professionals to help show you how to keep yourself motivated and focused on your next goals a therapist or life coach could help.
